About Image

The India Studies Association (ISA) has been founded to provide a unified, scholarly platform for the study of India’s civilizational heritage, contemporary transformations, and long-term future. At a moment when India is emerging as one of the world’s key cultural, economic, and strategic anchors, the need for rigorous, structured, and collaborative India-focused research has never been more urgent.

Hosted at The Hind School, ISA brings together researchers, educators, and institutions committed to strengthening the field of India Studies across disciplines. Its purpose is clear: to create a space where India can be examined with depth, seriousness, and intellectual honesty—beyond headlines, stereotypes, and fragmented academic silos.

India today stands at a defining moment in its civilizational arc. As a nation of 1.4 billion people with one of the world’s oldest cultural lineages, India’s story spans millennia while continuing to shape global politics, economics, technology, ecology, and culture. Understanding India requires an appreciation of both its historical continuity and its rapid modern transformation. ISA exists to make that understanding accessible, evidence-based, and globally relevant.

The Association adopts a consortium model, enabling collaboration across universities, independent scholars, researchers, civil society groups, policy practitioners, and early-career students. This structure allows ISA to serve not as a single department but as an open intellectual ecosystem—one that invites participation, fosters debate, and encourages interdisciplinary work across fields such as history, sociology, public policy, economics, philosophy, political science, environment, international relations, and technology studies.

Being hosted at The Hind School provides ISA with both academic grounding and institutional infrastructure. Through this partnership, the Association supports applied research, organizes lectures and seminars, publishes original scholarship, and builds open-access resources for learners worldwide. ISA also contributes to long-horizon national thinking, including research pathways related to India’s Vision 2047, which seeks to understand the ideas, capacities, and societal foundations that will shape India’s next phase of development.

At its core, the India Studies Association is committed to deep, evidence-based, culturally informed scholarship. It seeks to cultivate a community of researchers who approach India with seriousness, curiosity, and a commitment to intellectual integrity. In doing so, ISA aims to strengthen the global conversation on India—and ensure that the study of one of the world’s most influential civilizations is accessible to all who seek to understand it.
